Steam 720 Games One Week Record: 720 Releases and Why Most Vanished

Steam set a new weekly record with 720 releases, but 530 of them earned fewer than 10 reviews as discoverability gets tougher than ever.

Steam just set a new Steam 720 games one week record with 720 games released between August 24-30, 2026 - and almost nobody noticed most of them. Data from ICO Partners shows 530 of those releases earned between 0 and 9 reviews, while only 10 cracked 1,000 reviews.

A record-breaking flood

The number comes from ICO Partners CEO Thomas Bidaux, who has tracked Steam releases for years. In a post on August 31, he reported 720 new games launched on Steam during the week of August 24-30, 2026. That is the first time Steam has ever crossed 700 releases in a single week.

The pace is relentless. 720 in seven days averages out to about 102 games per day, or roughly 4 new games every hour. Bidaux had flagged 670 releases in a single week earlier in August and predicted the 700 mark would fall soon. It did - a month earlier than he expected, he noted on Bluesky.

For context, the scale has exploded. Steam saw just 436 releases in all of 2013. That jumped to over 19,000 games in 2024 and around 21,000 in 2025, according to ICO Partners data cited by LevelUp and Kotaku. The first half of 2026 already hit about 12,000 releases, a 19% increase over the same period in 2025. If the second half holds, 2026 will set another annual record.

Steam 720 games one week record: the numbers behind the silence

The headline record hides a quieter story. Of the 720 games that launched that week, 530 landed in the 0 to 9 review bracket. Only 10 surpassed 1,000 reviews. Nearly 75% had 10 reviews or fewer, which strongly suggests most were played by little more than friends and family.

Steam Week in Review: 54 idle games released on Steam last week, and many look eerily similar

That is not an outlier week. ICO Partners data for 2024 found around 80% of games released that year were essentially unplayed. LevelUp and Kotaku both highlighted that stat alongside the new weekly record, and it matches what players see on the store: a handful of breakouts like PEAK, Schedule I, Balatro and Megabonk, and a long tail that disappears the same week it appears.

Reviews are an imperfect proxy for sales, but on Steam they are the best public signal for attention. A game with fewer than 10 reviews after launch week has not found an audience, has not hit the algorithmic thresholds for visibility, and is unlikely to surface in discovery queues, top sellers, or trending lists without outside help.

The idle game invasion

Part of the flood is coming from one specific corner. PC Gamer's Steam Week in Review counted 54 idle games released on Steam last week alone, many with eerily similar art, names, and store assets.

Idle or clicker games are not new, but the current wave leans heavily on template-style production. Low-cost assets, minimal gameplay loops, and rapid reskins let small teams or solo publishers ship quickly and chase cheap visibility. When 54 of 720 releases in a single week fit that mold, they crowd New & Trending and New Releases rows that already move fast.

For players browsing without filters, that means more noise to scroll past before finding something handcrafted. For developers making more ambitious indies, it means your launch window competes not just with other indies, but with dozens of near-identical idle titles that launch, chart briefly on low price, and vanish.

What this means for developers and players

For developers, the takeaway is blunt: shipping on Steam is easier than ever, getting seen is harder than ever. With 100+ games launching per day, the default storefront gives you hours, not days, on the front page. Without wishlists banked before launch, press coverage, creators, or a community ready on day one, even a solid game can land in that 0-9 review bucket.

For players, the problem is the opposite side of the same coin. There is more choice, but less curation. Steam's discovery tools - discovery queue, interactive recommender, tags, and curators - help, but they work best when you train them. If you only check the front page or New Releases, you will miss most of the week's actual standouts because the sheer volume pushes them down before you log in.

This is not a quality judgment on all 720 games. Every week still produces genuine finds. It is a math problem. When 19,000 to 21,000 games launch per year and a single week can hit 720, no human can scan everything. The record will likely be broken again - Bidaux's trajectory points toward an 800-game week - so learning to filter is now part of PC gaming.

Too many games to sort?

Key takeaways

  • Steam set a new weekly record with 720 games released Aug 24-30, 2026, averaging 102 per day, per ICO Partners CEO Thomas Bidaux.
  • 530 of those 720 had 0-9 reviews and only 10 topped 1,000 reviews; nearly 75% had 10 or fewer.
  • Around 80% of games released in 2024 went essentially unplayed, showing this is a long-running discoverability crisis.
  • 54 idle games launched that same week, many with similar assets, adding to the noise in New Releases.
  • For players, use wishlists, tags, and the interactive recommender instead of relying on the front page to find the keepers.
